GLENWOOD IN THE
CIVIL WAR

Glenwood, Maryland was founded in 1822 by James B. Mathews, the town's original postmaster. Mathews was also a farmer and the owner of the general store. Mathews built a lovely home across the road from the store and called it Bloomsburg. During this time, the area was known as Mathews Post Office or more simply Mathews.

The town of Mathews figured prominently during the Civil War because troops from both the North and the South traveled through the region on their way to Antietam, Sharpsburg, and Gettysburg.

In 1874, James Mathews' son, Lycurgus, changed the town name to Glenwood.
