The Architecture
Bloomsburg was built in 1830 by James B. Mathews, the founder of Glenwood and its first postmaster. For these services, he received $116 per year. He administered the post office in his general store, located just southeast of this structure and no longer standing. The area was originally known as Mathews (or Mathews Store) and was renamed Glenwood in 1874.

This house is shown on both the 1860 Martenet Map and the 1878 Hopkin’s Atlas as the residence of J. B. Mathews. It features a circular copper plate between the two south chimneys, inscribed “1830” per Wikimapia. That copper plate is still in place between the two south chimneys. This photo was taken in 2000 prior to major enhancements to the house.
